Where Are You?
These days, everyone’s talking about search. Google is the undisputed king of search, of course, but there’s also Bing, Yahoo!, Ask.com and all sorts of others out there. And then there’s things like Siri and other natural-language smart phone searches, and Facebook or Twitter searches, and they’re all a little bit different and do their own thing in their own special way.
But what about dates? It’s easy to find the latest Justin Bieber gossip, but what if you need to find an event that’s only happening once? Or maybe it’s happening every day, but you’ll only be on town for a week? Date searches, and date range searches, are very important to us. Not only does our system need to be able to find an event on December 15th, but it also needs to find it on 12/15/2012, on Dec 15 ’12, on Saturday and on December 10-18, 2012. Not to mention all sorts of other variations, and we’re not even getting into international formats! In the US, we write December 15th, 2012 as 12/15/12- in Germany, it’s written as 15/12/12.
All that takes a huge amount of planning and thinking and use case testing. How does the system know that 12-15 is the 12th through the 15th, and not December of 2015? Well, it’s not 2015 yet, so we can lay that one to rest easily, but you get the picture. Overall, we’re very proud of the Zvents search system, and are looking forward to getting some new tweaks and use cases pushed live in a few days. The tech team has been working like mad for weeks now, and they should make our search that much better, faster, easier and more accurate.
